When I was on the third grade, I watched my mother transform from a victim of domestic abuse to an empowered single mother of three. Before then, my mom had traveled to Europe as a professional singer with Ray Charles, and was a stunning beauty full of personality and wit. Her life had so much potential and experiences that few people had at that time. Yet, a marriage to an abusive spouse destroyed her self esteem causing her to devalue who she was.
When my mother decided to leave that destructive relationship, she made a decision that would impact our lives forever. She chose life! Things weren’t easy for a single mother of three, but despite the odds, she completed college, paid off a house, watched her children graduate college and become parents. She had a strong faith which influenced her family and community. Her decision to live empowered not only impacted her, but us, her children as well.
This example of a woman who made the decision to change, a woman who chose a better life, has been the driving force of my passion for Metamorphosis.
With the help of an encouraging husband, Pastor Remus Wright, a supportive church, The Fountain of Praise by which this platform was launched and an amazing team of women and men who serve and support this organization, Metamorphosis has been transforming lives for over 11 years. It is impossible for Metamorphosis to exist without the leadership support of others. Additionally, there have been thousands of women who attended a Metamorphosis Conference, embraced the message of change, and implemented steps to make positive life changes. Like my mother, those women are empowered to live!
On Tuesday April 30, 2013, the City of Houston declared it “Metamorphosis Conference Day” because of our work with women locally and globally to empower them with a voice of change. Mayor Annise Parker and Council Woman Wanda Adams, who recently was a speaker at the Metamorphosis South Africa Conference in Cape Town, bestowed this honor upon me, Mia Wright, Founder and Director of Metamorphosis Inc. On behalf of our Board of Directors and the Alpha Team, this day will be remembered as a day for women making a change!
